Like many people, 2020 marked a big shift for me. We went into lockdown on my birthday, which was also a Friday the 13th, and I decided then and there to follow that auspicious date wherever it would lead.

It has not been a clear path, but rather a wandering one though dense fog. The path is there…

Be prepared to be unprepared

How often have things not gone according to plan? You think you’ve planned everything and then the unexpected happens and all your plans have to be set aside or altered . . . or reconfigured. It brings to mind the story of the young Scottish poet Robert Burns overturning the home of a mouse while plowing his field. It certainly wasn’t what the mouse planned on when he built his home and it leads Burns to consider how humans respond to the unexpected with despair when they were hoping for joy.…

ST

Going back to the mouse who's home was overturned- I bet they got started building it again right away!
I recently was doing some work in my garden, and of course, there was an any colony underneath a big rock I needed to move. When I saw this, I didn't disturb the soil, I just left it alone for 24 hours to see what the ants would do, since I saw right away that they were moving eggs. By the next day there was no sign of them! They had already salvaged what they could and moved on. Nature shows us the way!

Why don't things sell? 8:05
When your things don't sell... why not?

Why do you think that is? Before you continue to read, comment below first on what your hunch tells you...  If your stuff isn't selling well, here's why it might be...  You might be thinking a lot in isolation when it comes to what to offer. Analogy of mountaintop vs people at the river. To get clients, you must sell what others want (not just what you want). To understand what they want (to buy), you must do market discovery... that's what this course is about! Find out what your people are hungry for... for which they aren't finding satisfying options. Find the gaps in offerings that your people are *eagerly* looking for. Finding "product-market fit" is life or death for a business. For us who are coaches/healers/mentors, this translates into "You-topic-format-audience fit". You = your energy signature Topic = what your services are about Format = offer format, e.g. 1-1 services, group programs, or something else? Audience = of all the people you can reach, who's most interested to work with you? This is what the Authentic Market Discovery process unconvers. We help you discover what your ideal clients must buy, not just would be "nice to have." Bottom line -- You must choose the right thing to offer, if you want people to buy from you...

SB

When things don't sell at all it's because people probably don't actually want them. They don't see the value for them.

I like this definition of "selling" from Michael Neill:

"Selling is finding out what people already actually want and helping them get it."

He goes on to say that we do this by listening and getting to know people. 💡

If what I've got isn't selling, people don't think it will help them get what they want. They don't see the value or the value isn't there for them.

There's no judgement in this; it's just how it works. It's my job to communicate the impact of what I do as clearly as possible so that I can help the people I'm here to serve.

I believe the ways to create value are infinite, so it's just a matter of time before we find the match. 🤗

ST

@Stephanie Benedetto I think what you say about knowing the value of your offer -for yourself- is super important. Often, when we're kind of murky about what we're offering, we miss the mark in communicating it to others.

And then there's the piece about what do they actually want, anyway? And can they tell you what they want, or are they also uncertain of what would make a difference?

Welcome to the course! + Our community values

A warm welcome here! I encourage us to see this course as a community... not comments from random people, but rather, focused comments about specific topics, from your kindred spirits 😊 The most important part of a community is its culture. Each of us (who participate here) influence the culture with every interaction we have here.  A few values to keep in mind: Comment once, reply twice. For each comment you make, look for 2 other comments (especially ones with few replies) and add a reply – with your encouragement and suggestions (if appropriate). This helps to balance the comment/reply ratio, and gives you practice in seeking and giving support here. Notice and name each others' energy signatures. Each person's presence is unique, and each person has their strengths. It can be difficult for us to notice our own, and easier to notice others'. Whenever you notice someone's comment that refers to something personal to them, try to name something that you appreciate. We all have a fear of being fully seen. Let’s help each other feel accepted and received. Co-Learning Community. Nobody here (not even the "teacher") knows everything about market research/discovery... it's a rich process that can be customized greatly to each person's way of doing things, so let's create a co-learning environment here. Even I as a "teacher" can and will learn from your shares too! Share generously. Be supportive of others here. If you discover something that works, or hear about a great tip that helps with market discovery, please do share it with us. Comment under the appropriate lesson if possible, or if not sure where, just comment below. Sharing will make this course better for all of us! Keep all sharings confidential.  Let's keep this a safe space for sharing by promising to keep all comments (particularly the personal ones) confidential. Let me know below if these values are helpful, and if you have any suggestions. The values we embody here is what makes this course experience amazing for each other 😊 If no comments below and no ability to comment, first log into this course.

ST

I've definitely been in the flailing around trying to create something people want, but not really knowing what they want, even when I ask them directly! This has resulted in me feeling like maybe I have nothing to offer, and taking it all way too seriously as character flaws!

I say this because this is the HARD WAY to make progress....and I'm super excited to let George take some of the mystery out of this for me and get moving in the right direction.

How are the Soul Gym Circles going? 😊

Comment below with your experience of the Circles that you attend -- what do you love about it?  And any suggestions are welcome as well.

My session today with

@Susan Tutt was magic. She has a way of creating a space that invites creative thinking which leads to action. I’m very grateful for her guidance and willingness to enter into meaningful conversation too.
ST

@Michael Williams Thank you! I always appreciate the depth and breadth of our conversations, and the rest just takes care of itself!
MW

Today's session with

@Susan Tutt was very meaningful. I always feel myself with her. She is a wonderful listener, compassionate, and inspiring. Today, I came away feeling motivated and closer to finding my clarity.
ST

@Michael Williams ah, thanks! I appreciate our times together too, and always feel that I come away with a deeper awareness of my process, in all its many facets!
JY

I love them so much! It's the one place I can go to consistently to get support for what I am doing. When I bring a piece of content, I get such great feedback from my peers and it often leads to other conversations that generate ideas for more content, or how to deepen what I did create, etc. It's also so nice to just be with other people when most of my work time does not involve being with others. I love that it is usually a small group. It allows plenty of time to explore things in a leisurely way. I have so much energy for the rest of my work day after the Soul Gym Circle on Friday mornings!

ST

@Julia Yanker That's great feedback, thank you! I like that we are developing such good connections within the group, too, and are so open to learning more about the work each of the others do. Those perspectives, and the conversations that arise around the work we are sharing, are really deepening the experience of being a solopreneur for me.

I'm a big fan of the small groups, as I think they create a safe space for us to show up and be vulnerable when we need to. Like when we got to be part of @Opal Magnesium Weisbrod 's singing! I was so touched by that experience!

Hey y'all! Hope you can join us for the last Conscious Coworking of 2023.

What is that one task that would feed your soul if you got it done, but you just can't seem to get around to it? Here's your chance! We'll come together and do a short grounding meditation, talk about what we're working on and why it's important, work for one hour, then do a "check out" at the end. I'd love to see you there!

Looking for feedback on sales page for my new course

Hi Everyone,

I'm planning to pre-launch my new course around the Art of Mindful Visioning either tomorrow or Wednesday at a discounted rate through next Monday.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'm especially interested in hearing who you feel the ideal audience for this course might be.

I'm imagining it's someone who wants to learn how to create an effective vision. Someone who is open to the idea that in order to successfully realize a vision, they must learn how to train the c…

ST

@Mike Wang

I felt the video was really easy to take in, though I agree that it is obvious you were reading. I don't think that's totally off the mark, though- to me it shows that you want to make sure your message is clear.  One thing I notice, however, is that I don't have a good feel for you as an instructor, beyond that I'm quite sure you are highly organized and the material would be, too. Maybe that's what @Jessica Jennings, MS is saying about energy signature?

One thing I would suggest is to look at these (I'm copy/pasting) through the lens of "so what?", or "so you can". What happens when all these things come together? Especially if someone is caught in NOT having all those things, it can be hard to know how different life would be with them aligned. Does that make sense?

The Art of Mindful Visioning is NOT a course on goal-setting. It operates at a much deeper level. The course will teach you:
• How to create an effective vision for any area of your life (e.g., health, relationships, career and finances)( so you can...)
• How to train inner alignment and focus with the outer results you choose to create (e.g., joyful productivity)
• How to cultivate a strong belief and certainty in your vision
• How to generate and sustain motivation irregardless of external circumstances
• How to tap into your deeper "why" to drive you towards realizing your vision

It looks like an amazing course, good luck with your students! I hope my comments were helpful.

Soul Gem 10 - lullabies for newborn babies and their caretakers

Hello, everyone! I just got this idea to record lullabies for newborn babies to help them (and their caretakers) sleep.

You can listen to my very first lullaby HERE

This idea touches me on a deep level, because I was born 12 weeks before my due date.

I arrived on planet Earth amid a torrent of confusion and fear that I've only recently begun to heal from.

And I know that I'm not the only one who was shaken up by what happened.

I can't believe we are so close to the end of the year!

November:

  • Regular stage one content. Posting to Soul Gym as well as either IG stories and/or threads.
  • Simple newsletter. Get this back going.
  • ACF

December:

  • Continue with content and start to integrate ads.
  • Overall focus on play, polish, promote
  • Soak up holiday time with the family

@Shay Nichols

ST

@Jackie Johansen I like the play, polish, promote. Is that a George-ism?

ST

I'm curious about why this is the last intentions post before the end of the year, but I'll play along anyway!

November- figure out what "showing up for work" means to me in my business, and then do more of that. Like lots more.

  • posting, not ghosting
  • making concrete plans for a collab in the works
  • set dates for workshops I plan to run in preparation for a larger project launch

December- allow myself to take time off and "play" with the kids while they are off school: baking, board games, invite the ex-in-laws for supper, etc. Down time and dreaming.

  • but also, percolating on my own plans
  • reflecting on what has shifted in the past year, and where I want to lean in with more intention
  • rev up my DIY house reno plans for 2024 (taking care of my hobbies also helps me feel taken care of)

How to invite people in a self-paced course to the exclusive updated group program version

I have a list of people who have bought my self paced course over the last couple years, and I want to offer it updated as a group program. How do I invite them when I don't know many of them? I was planning to offer it free for them, since they've already paid for the self-paced course.

Should I invite them to jump on a strategy call? Offer it and say the live version is by invite only?

I want to get to know them first before welcoming them into a live group environment.

Alternatively, a fr…

ST

I wonder if you could let them know that you had this on offer, but also wanted to make sure it was a good fit for everyone, so then yes, the call, or a small workshop that could function as an information session? That way you'd see who showed up, and could follow up from there?

Content Strategies

I'm curious how people approach content groupings or "pillars" (if at all). I have / am again writing about career as a broad category.

Within career, I work with people around career change (within / moving to different companies / starting a biz), career emotions, career blocks, fear of losing a salary (money blocks), and others.

Do people think it's important to cover all the areas in which they work, in their social media content? If so, how do people "split time" between various areas…

ST

@Heather Lakatos I've created a board in Trello, which is kind of like having erasable ink, because I can make little notecards and then move them around. It shows me that I actually have lots of ideas on what to talk about. And I think, if I was super organized, I could also use Trello to visually track which posts got attention, and would get moved to stage 2, etc.

subscription payments

How do i set up an automatic payment schedule in paypal for a membership program? I have spent way to much time on this today 😟

FTA Webinars

I have a question about FTA workshops. I've only ever offered them to folks that I know (former & current clients, colleagues, friends) and I'd like to expand my reach. So, the hyper-vigilant part of me is worried about announcing this to the "world". My workshops are experiential and interactive, and so are there any tips for curating an event where I can somehow be assured that I have like-minded individuals in attendance that will play well with each other :)

ST

@Amie Garcia Hmm, that's a good question. How would you feel about an intake form, so you know if someone is a good fit?

ST

As is often the case, my intention for this week is to get back in the saddle.

I had a very busy week 📅  last week and I thought everything would sail smoothly on 🛶 once the week was done, but it hasn't been that way and so it appears that I have once again dropped a plate 🍽️ (the juggling plates metaphor is apt for me).

There are many more ideas💡💡💡 in my head than time to pick through them and choose one to work with.

I'm feeling very distracted by an imaginary project (a project I am dreaming of that for many practical reasons isn't really do-able, but I sure do want to spend time imagining it). 🏚️ I think where that leaves me is working out what to do in practical, concrete actions, so that the dreamy dreams could one day get paid for. 💸  This is a harsh reality for me.  I have tucked this dream away for such a long time that to have it resurface at this time when I am in no position to make it happen in a physical way...well, it saddens me. I'm bummed out, and feeling kinda gloomy. ☁

Also, kind of relieved that an offer I put out too lightly has fallen flat, with only my faithful @Donna Becker signing up for it, possibly because she's the only one who really knew when I was offering it? I will set it out again in a couple of weeks- add it to the list to decide when, and post about it, and bang some pots together over my own head so I get moving on it. 🤪 🍳 💥

I happy news, I spent all my "George Bucks" on courses, so part of my intentions this week are to set aside specific learning and implementation time on my calendar, so those lovely courses don't gather dust. I'm looking forward to CORE, the Frameworks, and Video Creation.

Also, I need to attend to a bunch of pesky and potentially time consuming admin tasks....hmm. Cheer up, also on the list!

@Jackie Johansen my favourite...post content I've written! The world is ready for you my friend.

2 Begin by imagining your ideal 20 3:40
Let's begin imagining your 20...

Imagine 20 people you love to work with – they enjoy your style and skills just as you are now, without you needing to change or improve anything – and you enjoy them as well. Part of this work – as all work of "authentic business" – is to practice believing in the value of your skills and presence, and stepping more into your authentic service-oriented power. Those 20 people probably already in your life/network right now. Draw them forth by writing a heartfelt description of them...  You're welcome to comment below as you tell us about them – anything you can tell us is great, their inner characteristics, outer (visible) demographics, their interests, and most importantly – why they like and trust you. And what they believe that you can support them with. No perfection needed here... just write what comes to you.  You can always update it later – and likely will :) After writing your comment, turn around and comment on 2 others' descriptions, especially if you resonate or know someone who is exactly like that! :) Just because you reply to someone's comment doesn't mean that you'll get a spot as part of their 20 ;-) but later in this course, if there's still space, and it seems aligned for the time being, they might reach out to you with a gentle invitation to play :-)

ST

My 20 people:

  • are in the first few years of their solopreneurships
  • are often healers, helpers, coaches, therapists, teachers: pulled to make a positive difference in the world
  • feel that their business, whatever it is, comes from the heart of themselves, and is deeply personal
  • and so they want to be sure to have a clear message as their "brand voice"
  • but seem to keep getting caught up in not knowing what to write, or how to write it in a way that connects with their own ideal clients
  • often, my 20 people are intimidated by the amount of writing they have to do for their business, or feel that they don't have the skills they need to craft an effective message
  • and really don't want to be inauthentic, manipulative, or misleading
  • They might be experiencing a general lack of confidence in their writing skills
  • or be totally overwhelmed by their websites
  • or by the many other small pieces of writing that they need to do for their businesses

When it comes to know me, like me, and trust me, my Fab 20:

  • align with my philosophy of copywriting/website design that's based on people making the best decisions for themselves
  • they know I'm a truth-teller, and not into using manipulation to get people to buy something (that may NOT be in their own best interest)
  • they know I am patient, that no questions are silly, even if you have to ask it multiple times as they learn
  • they appreciate that I am a wordy nerd who like to think big thoughts and have deep and meaningful conversations
  • they like that I have also worked as a massage therapist for many years,
  • and have a degree or two in Education
  • and they like that I am good at creating safe spaces to learn and work out those rough drafts of their writing work
ST

@Donna Becker @Vix Anderton You're now on the list! Thank you for the support :)

QUESTION - Is there something magical about 20? Can it be more or less?

ST

@Mary Veerkamp I'm with you, and not letting that number get me stuck. I have a solid 8 right now, and am guessing that they know others like themselves, and that eventually the 20 and + will be reality!

Lavender lessons

In the above photo, you will see my two pots of lavender one of those pots houses a very healthy, robust plant that has done very well all summer. The other, however, is not doing so well. It lasted a couple of months and then died. It simply dried up and turned into a bush of dried up sticks.

I fully intended to throw the “dead” plant away but I’m lazy and it sat there for months until one morning, I recognized that something was growing. My once “dead” lavender plant is alive again…

ST

@Michael Williams Ah, lavender is such a good teacher!

What would you do with the part of the analogy where you waited so lng and didn't through the "dead" one into the compost bin? Is there something there about waiting it out, to see if new life springs up from the dried sticks?

What's Your Super Power?

So I've been thinking about how we take care of ourselves...

For me I walk, to catch a big view, to see what the birds have to tell me...to see I'm a part of a bigger picture...it just makes me feel better...

I am a visual person. It is my sight that often brings me home and informs me about life.

You? What's your Super Power? Seeing, Feeling, Hearing or just plain Knowing??

If you are a feeler you might be more in touch with yourself when you're doing something, like you get bigger insight while…

ST

@Kristina Rogers Thanks for this reminder, it is timely. Bringing myself back to centre is something I feel like I have to do more often, so I don't get so far away from it!

For me, spending time in the garden, tidying up the house, folding laundry, reading in bed, cups of tea, hot baths, walking down to the lake to hear the waves lapping the shore, are all ways I recognize to pull myself back in.

I'm doing The Artist's Way right now, and this coming back to centre puts me in mind of the Artist Date, which has turned into a time to discover more of what works, more of what I like to do when I'm doing something just for me. Radical self-care!

I can't speak to what I do, though I hope to have a different opinion once I have take George's new course on Memberships!

But as a consumer, I like the application option. I also want to know I'm going to be a good fit in a program, and I perceive it as "high touch", meaning if I fill out a form, you are actually being really specific about who is a good fit for your program.

You posted this weeks ago....what did you end up doing? How is it going?
