I know that I want to be healthier, have more energy and be more joyous in my second half than in my first. I know that I want to support others in creating healthy habits. I also know what I must do in order to make those visions real. And that is to show up for myself consistently first. But why is showing up for my own healing so hard.
It's been easy to show up for friends, family, my spouse and my dogs, but not for me. My goals and dreams have always come last.
Over the past year, things have started to change. As I approached 50, I knew I had to get my coaching business started and get out of the job that has sucked up my energy leaving nothing left for living a joyous life. I started getting clear about what that business would look like and what actions I would take. And then I started to make progress. I started to say no to what didn't support that part of my life.
But as I started seeing things falling into place, challenges began to come up. I started getting sick often, family emergencies came up, new plans created new to-do lists and although my commitment to my business was now rock solid, I found myself in a seemingly losing battle to follow through with my health goals.
This is disheartening because I am a wellness coach and I am passionate about helping women in midlife create habits that support their visions of a healthy, joyous life in their second half. But how can I coach someone to do what I am not doing myself? And so in more ways than one, my health is foundational to my success as a coach and entrepreneur.
Monkey mind: But it is just so hard and there are other people to look after and you will fail anyway (and billions of other reasons).
Fact: I have not been doing what I have said I would do.
The good news is a coach and personal development junkie, I do have tools and support to help me see through the fog and get a new perspective on what have, up until now, been obstacles to reaching my health goals. Here are some new ways I've started to see the world and how I show up in it:
I am willing to create boundaries and say no (without the sky falling)
It is normal to hit some resistance and feel discomfort when starting a whole new lifestyle with new choices and habits.
Creating a new habits takes patience and consistency. One recipe, one day, one week at a time.
My body, mind and spirit are my foundation, capable of greatness when given the nourishment they need.
As a healthy, strong, energetic mid-life woman, I can be a model of possibility.
Showing up for my health and sharing my journey can inspire and help others struggling to show up for their healing.
Oh, and support from people who genuinely want to see you succeed, is priceless!
